Riding a motorcycle is the most exciting way to enjoy the road; offering the height of safety to bike riders is Ducati's commitment.

It is a commitment which takes us in various directions because motorcycle safety has many sides to it and we can only achieve our goals through well managed initiatives.

One side of our commitment is political. In fact, as members of the national and international motorcycle manufacturer associations (ANCMA and ACEM - respectively), 

we promote motorcycling as an asset for the present and future of transport to governments and help them make decisions which are sustainable for companies and motorcyclists.

Another side is our popular commitment, which aims to explain - also through these pages - that just a little effort to do the right thing is all that is needed to obtain a big reduction in the number of motorcycling accidents. In support of this, Ducati has organised its DRE courses on safe and sports riding for the past ten years, providing training about how to maintain better control of the bike in extreme conditions.

Finally, we make a technological commitment, on both active and passive safety aspects. Designing increasingly easy-to-handle bikes, which offer great control and reliability, not only increases riding pleasure, but also improves safety. Equipping bikes with advanced systems such as ABS and traction control raises safety standards even further.

And let's not forget the role of hi-tech clothing, with increasingly advanced protectors and materials designed to withstand impacts and scrapes.

To Promote this fundamental topic, Ducati has undertaken major initiatives over the years, such as the campaign held throughout 2009 which offered a back protector to everyone who purchased a new Ducati and distributed tens of thousands of back protectors all over Europe.

Newest Ducati Streetfighter

Ducati will soon to launch the newest varian of motorbike in 2010. This motorbike is he high-end S model Streetfighter earlier this year when we hammered it around the marvelous Ascari Circuit in Spain at its press introduction. It certainly impressed us on the track, but what we didn't yet know is how well the new Duc works in the wide-ranging conditions on the street. We also needed to find out if the base Streetfighter is also worthy of our Italian bike rapture. At $14,995, the standard Streetfighter retails for $4,000 less than the upmarket S version, and by doing so it goes without trick Ohlins suspension, Ducati Traction Control and some carbon fiber bits. Also, cast-aluminum wheels replace the lighter forged hoops on the S.

The Streetfighter experience begins even before inserting its key. It looks downright menacing sitting cocked left on its sidestand, although it's a bit dense and cluttered, especially compared to the tidier air-cooled Monster lineup. It's not exactly what we'd describe as beautiful, but its stripped-down appearance of industrial art gives it a real sense of purpose and machinery-ness. Let's be plain: This thoroughbred isn't suited for a casual or inexperienced pilot. A touchy throttle and a highly responsive engine give the SF an enthusiastic ready-to-romp feeling – perhaps harder than you are ready for. Truth be told, the humbler and cheaper Monster 1100 (our choice for Best Standard of 2009) makes for a better and easier street ride than the potent and uncompromising 'Fighter.

For those who feel the 370Z doesn't have enough performance, Nissan has created the Nismo 370Z. You can liken the car, which bears the name of Nissan's Motorsports arm (Nismo), to a tuner version of the popular sports coupe, but all the tweaks were made in-house. The car was developed by Nismo and the company's conversion specialist, Autech, in Japan.

It's immediately clear — this isn't your ordinary 370Z. The wild body kit includes an extended nose, new side sills and flashy rear spoiler. There are also shapely new front fenders that are reminiscent of a European supercar. Nissan claims that all the body pieces are functional, providing extra downforce at high speed. Inside the cockpit, Nismo logos on the seats and instruments tell you that this isn't your everyday 370Z.

Under the hood, Nismo breathed an extra 18 bhp into the 3.7-liter V-6, so now it pumps out 350 at 7400 rpm and 276 lb.-ft. of torque at 5200. With the added power, and no weight gain, the Nismo 370Z will be quicker than the stock car in a straight line. We expect 0 to 60 mph times of 4.5 seconds.

The car's handling has been improved, too, via stiffer suspension. Compared to the standard setup, front spring rates have been dialed up 15 percent, and rear spring rates increased 10 percent. There are also fatter anti-roll bars at both ends. Overall, roll stiffness has been increased by 15 percent, says Nissan, and the front and rear damping factors have been increased by 40 percent and 140 percent respectively. Although the ride quality will be harsher, the Nismo Z will undoubtedly take corners better and be faster around a racetrack.

The Nismo 370Z will be sold at Nissan dealerships starting in June. Although prices have not yet been announced, we're expecting something in the neighborhood of $37,000.
