Virgin Group, konglomerasi usaha milik Richard Branson, akan memulai trayek penerbangan luar angkasa mereka tahun ini. Melalui bendera Virgin Galactic, maskapai perjalanan antariksa pertama di dunia, layanan komersil ini akan dimulai pada awal 2013.
Seperti dikutip dari kantor berita Reuters, Selasa (28/2/2012) Virgin Galactic sudah mengantongi 500 calon penumpang trayek sub-orbital yang mereka operasikan. Penerbangan akan dilakukan oleh pesawat luar angkasa SpaceShipTwo yang bisa menampung enam penumpang dan dua pilot.
Pesawat ini dibangun dan diuji coba oleh Scaled Composite milik pabrikan Northtrop Grummman yang biasa membuat jet tempur. Saat ini SpaceShipTwo tengah melakukan serangkaian uji coba di area milik Scaled Composites, di Gurun Mojave, California. "Kami berharap roket bisa dipasang dalam waktu dekat dan penerbangan perdana bisa dilakukan akhir tahun," kata Kepala Pilot Virgin Galactic, David Mackay, kemarin.
Wisata penerbangan sub-orbital ini akan menelan biaya US$ 200 ribu atau sekitar Rp 1,8 miliar per orang. Dengan ketinggian 68 mil, para penumpang akan merasakan suasana di ruang angkasa, termasuk pengalaman melayang tanpa gravitasi.
"Banyak hal yang bisa dilakukan," kata astronot Neil Armstrong di acara konferensi tahunan para peneliti dan pegiat ruang angkasa. Armstrong ialah astronot yang turut dalam perjalanan perdana Lembaga Antariksa Amerika Serikat (NASA) pada 20 Juli 1969 dengan pesawat Apollo 11.
Hingga kini, Virgin Galactic menjadi satu-satunya maskapai yang melayani penerbangan ruang angkasa untuk tujuan komersil. SpaceShipTwo merupakan pesawat pertama dari lima armada yang dimiliki Virgin. Pesawat ini telah menyelesaikan 31 kali tes penerbangan di luar atmosfer, Dari frekuensi itu, 15 di antaranya dilakukan dengan bantuan roket WhiteKnightTwo dan 16 lainnya melalui gliding tes tanpa pesawat perantara.
